Leak and burst pipe repair
Water where it should not be? Find an English-speaking plumber to find the leak and fix it, with a written quote first.
Signs you need a plumber
- Water dripping from the ceiling or a light fitting
- Damp patches or bubbling paint on a wall
- A water bill higher than usual
- The water meter turns with every tap closed
- A puddle under the sink, the water heater or the washing machine
What the plumber does
- Finds where the water comes from, also behind tiles
- Replaces the broken pipe, joint or valve
- Checks the pressure once the repair is done
- Tells you if the damage is one for your insurance or the condominium
Before the plumber comes
Close the main stopcock (torneira de segurança). It is often near the meter or under the kitchen sink.
Switch off the electricity if water is near sockets or lights.
Take photos of the damage. Your insurer will ask for them.
What it costs
Every plumber sends a written price, with IVA, before any work starts. You can compare up to three.
Frequently asked questions
Who pays for a leak in a flat?
It depends on where the leak starts. Inside your flat, it is usually you or your home insurance. In a shared pipe, it is usually the condominium. Our leak guide explains it.
How do I know if I have a hidden leak?
Close every tap and look at the water meter. If it still turns, water is going somewhere. A plumber can find where.
